Book Food and the City: New York's Professional Chefs, Restaurateurs, Line Cooks, Street Vendors, and Purveyors Talk About What They Do and Why They Do It Review :

Enjoyable and eye-opening look at New York City's food industry, particularly its restaurants, told from the perspective of the people who work for or own the businesses. The book gave me a lot of ideas about places I should visit and information about what it's like to work behind the scenes at the city's top eateries. I liked the way the book went beyond just covering restaurants to also show what it's like to work for a food cart or a bakery or a catering service or the Hunts Point Market. At times, some of the stories about working at the top restaurants seemed a bit repetitive so it was good to have more of a variety of businesses. The book reminded me in some ways of Studs Terkel's books "Working" and "American Dreams," by giving you these chapters about people's working lives in their own words. Many of the stories were fascinating and they really demonstrated the importance of how this city's immigrant culture and diversity has brought new tastes and ways of doing business to this city, and how the drive to succeed here can really make a restaurant stand out from the crowd when the owner or chef has imagination and the willingness to try something different.
Imagine NYC without good food? Well you cantI cant and this wonderful collections of stories about people in the food business explains their passions and hints at why many of us cant ever think of living elsewhere. When I lived in Seattle and found out they didn't deliver Chinese on a Sat night I almost plotzed. And try to find a good bagel west of the Hudson or a knish. And now we live with great Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese, French Italian and Mexican and all of it is part of the culture and rituals of the city. When our favorite Indian restaurant closed on the Upper Westside we went into shock. Yes it was the food but also the people who we got to know and who knew us...The city is a big town but all these stories and life lessons remind us that it is made up of many many personal tales and these tales connect us to each other and make us New Yorkers whether you were born in Greece, or New Orleans or Moscow.
